353. French Civilization and Literature. 4 cr. hrs.<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> the cultural, social and political climate<br />

<strong>of</strong> France since the sixteenth century supported by a<br />

detailed study <strong>of</strong> French poetry; review <strong>of</strong> selected<br />

grammar and sentence structure; and opportunities<br />

to speak French. Prerequisites: Any 300-level<br />

French course. Spring semester, every third year.<br />

354. French Novel <strong>of</strong> the 20th Century.<br />

4 cr. hrs. A detailed study <strong>of</strong> Francophone novels<br />

<strong>of</strong> the twentieth century, with emphasis on issues<br />

<strong>of</strong> writing and maturity into adulthood; review <strong>of</strong><br />

selected grammar and sentence structures; and<br />

opportunities to speak French. Prerequisite: any<br />

300 level French course. Spring semester, every<br />

third year.<br />

415. Synthesis <strong>of</strong> French Literature and Culture.<br />

4 cr. hrs. A seminar requiring the synthesis <strong>of</strong> skills<br />

learned in other classes, including independent<br />

reading <strong>of</strong> a major literary work, literary analysis,<br />

cultural and historical knowledge, research, and<br />

presentations <strong>of</strong> individual work in both written<br />

and oral formats. Two class sessions with expectations<br />

<strong>of</strong> individual initiative in research, reading,<br />

analysis and development <strong>of</strong> two papers (literary<br />

analysis and history), one oral presentation (culture)<br />

and an annotated bibliography on a topic or topics<br />

<strong>of</strong> choice. Prerequisite: 16 credit hours numbered<br />

300 or above. Spring semester as needed.<br />

Spanish<br />

111. Intensive Beginning Spanish I. 4 cr. hrs.<br />

Begins with pronunciation and moves into the<br />

essentials <strong>of</strong> grammar. There is practice in conversation,<br />

composition, and reading. (Students with two<br />

or more years <strong>of</strong> high school Spanish may not<br />

enroll.) Fall semester.<br />

112. Intensive Beginning Spanish II. 4 cr. hrs.<br />

A continuation <strong>of</strong> the study <strong>of</strong> essentials <strong>of</strong> grammar<br />

with further practice in conversation, composition<br />

and reading. Prerequisite: SPA 111 or its equivalent.<br />

Spring semester.<br />

SPA 114. Accelerated Elementary Spanish.<br />

4 cr. hrs. An introductory course in Spanish covering<br />

the skills <strong>of</strong> listening, speaking, reading and<br />

writing Spanish. The course covers the same material<br />

as SPA 111 and 112 at an accelerated pace for<br />

students who have had two or more years <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Courses</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Study</strong> – Languages<br />

Spanish in high school, but whose placement test<br />

scores indicate that they are not adequately prepared<br />

to enter SPA 211.<br />

211. Intermediate Spanish I. 4 cr. hrs.<br />

Review <strong>of</strong> grammar, further practice in conversation<br />

and composition, reading from representative<br />

Spanish and Spanish-American authors as well as<br />

cultural readings, and extensive practice in writing.<br />

Prerequisite: SPA 112 or 114 or equivalent.<br />

213. Introduction to Literary<br />

Readings and Grammar Review. 2 cr. hrs.<br />

An introduction to the study <strong>of</strong> literature and literary<br />

analysis. Literature will be selected from Spain,<br />

Latin America and Latino (USA) sources. Intensive<br />

grammar review and compositions, as well as readings<br />

about the authors and their cultural context,<br />

will accompany the study <strong>of</strong> the texts. Prerequisite:<br />

Spanish 211 or equivalent.<br />

214. Spanish for the Working World. 2 cr. hrs.<br />

Introduction to the appropriate use <strong>of</strong> Spanish for<br />

business, international trade and other pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

contexts. Emphasis is placed on commercial terminology,<br />

documentation and correspondence. Areas<br />

such as advertising, trade, transportation, banking,<br />

and finance will be covered in this course.<br />

Prerequisite: Spanish 211 or equivalent.<br />

216. Special Topics in Hispanic Culture. 2 cr. hrs.<br />

This course will study topics related to the history,<br />

civilization and literature <strong>of</strong> Spanish-speaking populations<br />

in the United States, Latin America and<br />

Spain. Prerequisite: Spanish 211 or equivalent.<br />

306. The Chicano Experience 4 cr. hrs. This<br />

course will trace the history <strong>of</strong> the Chicano presence<br />

in the United States from the period <strong>of</strong> Spanish colonization,<br />

through the Mexican-American war and<br />

up to the present. The student will examine writings<br />

in the disciplines <strong>of</strong> history, literature and sociology<br />

in order to gain an understanding <strong>of</strong> the current and<br />

historical issues in the Chicano community. The<br />

major questions addressed will be those <strong>of</strong> identity<br />

and the struggle for place, recognition and justice in<br />

the society at large. Prerequisite: at least 2 hrs. in<br />

intermediate Spanish courses beyond SPA 211.<br />

320. Topics in Hispanic Civilization 4 cr. hrs.<br />

An introduction to the literature, history and cultures<br />

<strong>of</strong> Spain and Spanish America. Major literary<br />
