It was <strong>at</strong> this time, (continued B.)<br />
th<strong>at</strong> I became<br />
acquainted with <strong>the</strong> Count, and found him a very<br />
clever person ;<br />
he was evidently very much in love,<br />
and almost distracted <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> growing coolness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
lady.<br />
It was said, th<strong>at</strong> she never really encouraged his<br />
<strong>at</strong>tentions, and th<strong>at</strong> but f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r, she would<br />
have avoided a frequent intercourse, and knowing<br />
no one <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> time, she was somewh<strong>at</strong> dependant on<br />
him.<br />
A few weeks went by, <strong>the</strong> lady still a Belle, and<br />
<strong>the</strong> Count evidently neglected.<br />
The season passed, and <strong>the</strong> party left <strong>the</strong> Springs.<br />
On <strong>the</strong>ir arrival <strong>at</strong> Philadelphia, <strong>at</strong> a boarding house,<br />
•whi<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Count followed, (it was <strong>at</strong> a boarding<br />
house where he had first seen her.)—The lady wrote<br />
liim a letter, f<strong>or</strong>bidding his fur<strong>the</strong>r visits <strong>or</strong> <strong>at</strong>tentions.<br />
The next m<strong>or</strong>ning, <strong>the</strong> Count was dead—he<br />
had taken laudanum on <strong>the</strong> night, he received <strong>the</strong><br />
letter discarding him, and had dreamed away existence.<br />
« Nothing in his hfe<br />
Became him hke <strong>the</strong> leaving it :<br />
he died<br />
As one th<strong>at</strong> had been studied in his de<strong>at</strong>h<br />
To throw away, <strong>the</strong> dearest thing he owned,<br />
As 'twere a careless trifle."
