acquainted with <strong>the</strong> Count, and found him a very<br />

clever person ;<br />

he was evidently very much in love,<br />

and almost distracted <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> growing coolness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

lady.<br />

It was said, th<strong>at</strong> she never really encouraged his<br />

<strong>at</strong>tentions, and th<strong>at</strong> but f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r, she would<br />

have avoided a frequent intercourse, and knowing<br />

had taken laudanum on <strong>the</strong> night, he received <strong>the</strong><br />

letter discarding him, and had dreamed away existence.<br />

« Nothing in his hfe<br />

Became him hke <strong>the</strong> leaving it :<br />

he died<br />

As one th<strong>at</strong> had been studied in his de<strong>at</strong>h<br />
