62 WHITE SULPHUR PAPERS.<br />

niently ; <strong>the</strong> dining room is large and airy, and <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>at</strong>tendance very good.<br />

The w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spring is<br />

not so pleasant to <strong>the</strong><br />

taste as th<strong>at</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>White</strong> <strong>Sulphur</strong>, though somewh<strong>at</strong><br />

similar; having an additional dash <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

sulph<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> soda in its composition.<br />

We enjoyed <strong>the</strong> fine walks in <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood<br />

over <strong>the</strong><br />

heights, having on all sides <strong>of</strong> us <strong>the</strong> finest<br />

mountain scenery, and <strong>at</strong>tended <strong>the</strong> ball in <strong>the</strong> evening<br />

w^hich was quite a brilliant one, where we met<br />

many <strong>of</strong> our fair acquaintances from <strong>the</strong> <strong>White</strong>.<br />

The living <strong>at</strong> this spring is so very fine, th<strong>at</strong> many<br />

special excursions are made from <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>springs</strong><br />

to dine here, dance in <strong>the</strong> evening, and return homo<br />

next day.<br />

The thriving town <strong>of</strong> Union is within a few miles<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>springs</strong>.<br />

We left <strong>the</strong> Salt S-alphur next m<strong>or</strong>ning after breakfast,<br />

not intending this should be our last visit, and<br />

continued our route to <strong>the</strong> Red <strong>Sulphur</strong>, <strong>the</strong> distance<br />

to which from this place, is seventeen miles, over a<br />

very good road, through a wildly beautiful and un^<br />

cultiv<strong>at</strong>ed part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country, telling <strong>of</strong> romance<br />

and adventure in every sedge and cavern and shaded<br />

stream, which you pass on your route.<br />

You have a fine view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole establishment
