and claims <strong>the</strong> first haunch, with <strong>the</strong> privilege <strong>of</strong><br />
making a present <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
o<strong>the</strong>r to w^hom he pleases.<br />
Gre<strong>at</strong> prepar<strong>at</strong>ions were making one m<strong>or</strong>ning f<strong>or</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> hunt. A slight rain <strong>the</strong> evening previous had<br />
laid <strong>the</strong> dust somewh<strong>at</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> ground was thought<br />
to be in good <strong>or</strong>der, and <strong>the</strong> dogs were keen f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
scent. The President was to <strong>at</strong>tend <strong>the</strong> hunt th<strong>at</strong><br />
day, and much pleasure was anticip<strong>at</strong>ed, and <strong>the</strong><br />
sou<strong>the</strong>rn men were anxious to show <strong>the</strong> n<strong>or</strong><strong>the</strong>rners<br />
a Httle real good sp<strong>or</strong>t.<br />
There was a mounting and making ready among<br />
<strong>the</strong> party. Col. S— —<br />
, Col. H , <strong>of</strong> Carolina,<br />
and Dr. C , <strong>the</strong> leaders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chase, and <strong>the</strong><br />
crack shots were <strong>the</strong>re—and Nimrod, raising his<br />

Tliis being an uncommon day, it was given out<br />
th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> ladies could accompany <strong>the</strong><br />
party, following,<br />
those who pleased, in carriages.<br />
The party started and took <strong>the</strong> Greenbriar route.<br />
Nimrod with <strong>the</strong> hounds in front, and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> cavaliers<br />
with <strong>the</strong>ir velvet co<strong>at</strong>s and caps, and rifles<br />
and double-barrels. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gentlemen w^ho<br />
carried no guns, preferred ambling along with <strong>the</strong><br />
carriages, as much m<strong>or</strong>e gallant than leaving <strong>the</strong>m,<br />
f<strong>or</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r deer in <strong>the</strong> mountains.
