ACIDULOUS SPRINGS.<br />

" Under this head many writers on mineral w<strong>at</strong>ers place<br />

all those <strong>springs</strong> which contain a large prop<strong>or</strong>tion <strong>of</strong> free<br />

carbonic acid,<br />

They are f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> most part cold, very sparkling,<br />

and effervescing without smell, <strong>of</strong> a sharp piquant taste,<br />

and soon lose <strong>the</strong>ir properties by exposure to <strong>the</strong> <strong>at</strong>mosphere.<br />

Tlieir oper<strong>at</strong>ion is cooling and refreshing, and <strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> same<br />

time exhilir<strong>at</strong>ing, altering <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> secretions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

alimentary canals and kidneys, and increasing <strong>the</strong>ir quantity.<br />

These w<strong>at</strong>ers are very commonly taken ei<strong>the</strong>r pure <strong>or</strong><br />

mixed with wine, as an <strong>or</strong>dinary beverage, and are<br />

not unfrequently<br />

exhibited in febrile and inflamm<strong>at</strong><strong>or</strong>y complaints.<br />

They sometimes, however, prove too exciting, producing<br />

head-aches, heaviness, confusion <strong>of</strong> ideas, with general<br />

agit<strong>at</strong>ion and sleeplessness ;<br />

cases <strong>of</strong> dyspepsia, nervous<br />

but are highly useful in many<br />

affections, with <strong>the</strong> character<br />

<strong>of</strong> relax<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>or</strong> t<strong>or</strong>p<strong>or</strong>,<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> urinary <strong>or</strong>gans.<br />

pulmonary complaints, and diseases<br />

The sweet w<strong>at</strong>er is perhaps <strong>the</strong> best<br />

and most familiar w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>of</strong> this class."<br />

Under <strong>the</strong> above head may be classed <strong>the</strong> Sweet<br />

Sprmgs, in Monroe county, <strong>Virginia</strong>, which has<br />

been described in <strong>the</strong> preceding chapter.<br />
