20 WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS.<br />
was wont to spend so much <strong>of</strong> his time ; and <strong>the</strong><br />
cabin is near by which he long occupied.<br />
A party were playing <strong>at</strong> nine-pins, on <strong>the</strong> green,<br />
<strong>the</strong> principal amusement here, (besides b<strong>at</strong>hing;)<br />
and o<strong>the</strong>rs were diverting <strong>the</strong>mselves with quoits.<br />
We left <strong>the</strong> Warm Springs, intending to return<br />
again, <strong>at</strong> some day, on our way homeward. This<br />
is<br />
<strong>the</strong> place where <strong>the</strong> company meet on <strong>the</strong> winding<br />
up <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> season ; friendships, begun elsewhere,<br />
are here cemented ;<br />
promises to write are made ; and<br />
- maidens here take leave <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir lovers. There are<br />
many bright recollections about <strong>the</strong> Warm Springs.<br />
Six miles beyond <strong>the</strong> Warm, we came to <strong>the</strong> Hot<br />
Springs. " I will get out here," says <strong>the</strong> invalid.<br />
"I will leave this place as quickly as posssible,"<br />
says <strong>the</strong> man <strong>of</strong> pleasure, " f<strong>or</strong> I will not look <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
halt and <strong>the</strong> lame.<br />
These <strong>springs</strong> are much celebr<strong>at</strong>ed f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir hot<br />
b<strong>at</strong>hs, so beneficial f<strong>or</strong> persons far gone in strength,<br />
and deeply affected with rheum<strong>at</strong>ic affections, contusions,<br />
broken limbs, &c. Many w^onderful cures<br />
are perf<strong>or</strong>med here. The days <strong>of</strong> many a po<strong>or</strong> man<br />
have been leng<strong>the</strong>ned, if not made happier, by recovery.<br />
I saw a United St<strong>at</strong>es Sen<strong>at</strong><strong>or</strong> who had left Washington<br />
a few weeks bef<strong>or</strong>e in a very low st<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong><br />
health ;<br />
he was now convalescent, and able to bear<br />
<strong>the</strong> f<strong>at</strong>igues <strong>of</strong> a journey home to <strong>the</strong> South.
