At dinner every one was very gay. The gentlemen<br />

were in fine spirits <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> success <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

m<strong>or</strong>ning expedition, having brought in two fine deer,<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m said to have been killed by Col. H<br />

,<br />

<strong>of</strong> Carolina, who is invariably successful.<br />

After dinner, I went into <strong>the</strong> ball room to procure<br />

from <strong>the</strong> leader <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> band a very beautiful waltz<br />

tli<strong>at</strong> is quite a favourite here, and as it was very<br />

warm, returned home, and spent <strong>the</strong> gre<strong>at</strong>er part <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> afternoon in copying it.<br />

At sundown, Mrs.<br />

called in her barouche with her niece and Mr.<br />

and asked me to ride. I readily acceded to her<br />

proposal, and <strong>the</strong> evening being very fine, w^e drove<br />

as far as <strong>the</strong> Greenbriar bridge, and from being<br />

inspired by <strong>the</strong> scenery, I suppose, we entered all<br />

<strong>of</strong> us into a very sentimental convers<strong>at</strong>ion. We<br />

staid out so l<strong>at</strong>e, th<strong>at</strong> on our return we found tea<br />

was over, and all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> walks and lawns lined with<br />

<strong>the</strong> gay and happy. The table was not entirely<br />

cleared however, and we managed to have our<br />

supper very comf<strong>or</strong>tably. We strolled round afterwards,<br />

to one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> white cottages, and found a<br />

laughing party engaged <strong>at</strong> cards, playing old maid,<br />

we remained until one <strong>of</strong> us was left with <strong>the</strong> queen,<br />

but had no p<strong>at</strong>ience to stay any longer.<br />

The ball was m<strong>or</strong>e brilHant than last evening,<br />

and when we left it, <strong>the</strong> moon was shining so bright-
