A Spanish gentleman who was here<br />
during <strong>the</strong><br />
past summer, and who had travelled a gre<strong>at</strong> deal,<br />
and visited all <strong>the</strong> <strong>springs</strong> on <strong>the</strong> continent and in<br />
Germany, gave <strong>the</strong>se w<strong>at</strong>ers <strong>the</strong> preference over<br />
all<br />
o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />
The notice <strong>of</strong> persons was first <strong>at</strong>tracted to this<br />
spring by <strong>the</strong> quantities <strong>of</strong> deer wliich came to<br />
drink <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> licks round about,<br />
f<strong>or</strong>med by <strong>the</strong> overflowing<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>ers from <strong>the</strong> spring, which have<br />
since been drained <strong>of</strong>f.<br />
The discovery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> celebr<strong>at</strong>ed Springs <strong>of</strong> Bareges,<br />
among <strong>the</strong> Pyrenees, is <strong>at</strong>tributed to a sheep,<br />
which was observed to stray from its flock, and direct<br />
its course towards <strong>the</strong>m; when <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> country soon became acquainted w<strong>at</strong>h <strong>the</strong>ir efiicacy.<br />
An English writer thus speaks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />
<strong>springs</strong>, whose w<strong>at</strong>ers are said in many respects to<br />
be analagous to those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>White</strong> <strong>Sulphur</strong>:<br />
"Bareges was not much frequented until Madame<br />
de Maintenon being <strong>at</strong> Bagneres, on account<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> health <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> young Duke de Maine, and<br />
hearing <strong>of</strong> Bareges, took <strong>the</strong> Duke tlii<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
Since<br />
th<strong>at</strong>, <strong>the</strong>y have been gre<strong>at</strong>ly res<strong>or</strong>ted to by invalids<br />
from all parts, especially by w^ounded military<br />
men.
