An hour <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spring during <strong>the</strong> m<strong>or</strong>ning and<br />
evening, when <strong>the</strong> company all g<strong>at</strong>her <strong>the</strong>re, is <strong>the</strong><br />
time f<strong>or</strong> observ<strong>at</strong>ion—where you may learn <strong>the</strong><br />
news, survey <strong>the</strong> new comers ; and where diffident<br />
men take stolen glances <strong>at</strong> beauty.<br />
It is long bef<strong>or</strong>e breakfast, just after sun rise, and<br />
r<strong>at</strong>her cool; here comes a gentleman wrapped in<br />
his thick m<strong>or</strong>ning gown, with slippers and cap, he<br />
stops <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spring, dips <strong>the</strong> long-handled glass and<br />
takes one draught ;<br />
he whistles himself awake, takes<br />
ano<strong>the</strong>r, and <strong>the</strong>n returns to Bachel<strong>or</strong>'s row, to sleep<br />
an hour. There comes a maid with a pitcher to<br />
carry <strong>the</strong> cooling draught to some sleeping beauty<br />
in Paradise row.<br />
Tv/o old gentlemen have come to <strong>the</strong> Spring;<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are discussing <strong>the</strong> merits and gre<strong>at</strong> benefits<br />
be derived from <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>ers.<br />
says, he has been in <strong>the</strong> habit <strong>of</strong> taking<br />
to<br />
One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />
six glasses<br />
f<strong>or</strong> some m<strong>or</strong>nings past, and he feels so much better,<br />
he believes he will now take eight.<br />
Numbers are coming in, imp<strong>at</strong>ient f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir daily<br />
lib<strong>at</strong>ions. Dyspepsia enters <strong>the</strong> area, weak and<br />
wasted ; he takes perhaps four glasses, and retires<br />
with a rencrv<strong>at</strong>ed walk. Hypochondria comes ; he<br />
sees no one f<strong>or</strong> aw^hile, and will know no one ; he<br />
di'inks one glass, se<strong>at</strong>s himself, and in a little<br />
while<br />
has taken four m<strong>or</strong>e ; he rises—tries to smile, and<br />
makes a remark on <strong>the</strong> we<strong>at</strong>her.
