f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> antiqu<strong>at</strong>ed guardian <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> b<strong>at</strong>h.<br />
The Sweet Springs are among <strong>the</strong> most ancient<br />
and celebr<strong>at</strong>ed w^<strong>at</strong>ering places in <strong>the</strong> United St<strong>at</strong>es,<br />
and it is only surprising, th<strong>at</strong> until very l<strong>at</strong>ely, so few<br />
improvements have been made in <strong>the</strong> buildings.<br />
large and handsome hotel is now erecting, which<br />
will be ready f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> reception <strong>of</strong> guests in <strong>the</strong> summer<br />
<strong>of</strong> 1839, and <strong>the</strong> accommod<strong>at</strong>ions will <strong>the</strong>n be<br />
sufficient f<strong>or</strong> four hundred persons. Tliis has been<br />
long wanting, f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> cottages are mostly old and<br />

The bar room <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present day, was once <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong><strong>at</strong>re <strong>of</strong> quite a different display. The county<br />
court w^as f<strong>or</strong>merly held in th<strong>at</strong> room, where P<strong>at</strong>rick<br />
Henry, and o<strong>the</strong>r gre<strong>at</strong> men <strong>of</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>,<br />
heard to thimder <strong>the</strong>ir eloquence.<br />

There is a continual flow and ebb <strong>of</strong> company<br />
here during <strong>the</strong> summer, and it is only in <strong>the</strong> l<strong>at</strong>ter<br />
