SALINE<br />
APERIENT SPRINGS.<br />
" Tliis class <strong>of</strong> Springs is distinguished from o<strong>the</strong>rs iu<br />
containing as a predomin<strong>at</strong>ing ingredient sulplii<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> soda,<br />
(Glauber's salt) <strong>or</strong> sulph<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> magnesia, (Epsom salts)<br />
which sometimes exists in large quantities ; <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r mineralizing<br />
substance, exist in compar<strong>at</strong>ively small prop<strong>or</strong>tions.<br />
Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se Springs are very ga&eous and <strong>of</strong><br />
a high temper<strong>at</strong>ure, o<strong>the</strong>rs are cold and contain but little<br />
gas.<br />
The Hot Springs are usually energetic in <strong>the</strong>ir action<br />
and exceedingly exciting to <strong>the</strong> system, generally stimulamul<strong>at</strong>ing<br />
<strong>the</strong> vascular apar<strong>at</strong>us, and increasing <strong>the</strong> secretions.<br />
The cold ones are antiphylogestic, cooling, and<br />
aperient purg<strong>at</strong>ive, <strong>or</strong> diuretic, acc<strong>or</strong>ding to <strong>the</strong> quantity<br />
taken. They usually bear exp<strong>or</strong>t<strong>at</strong>ion well, and are<br />
less objectionable than <strong>the</strong> maj<strong>or</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> mineral <strong>springs</strong><br />
in st<strong>at</strong>es <strong>of</strong> vascular pheth<strong>or</strong>a, febrile affection, and congestion.<br />
Artificially prepared <strong>the</strong>y are nearly as efficacious<br />
as <strong>the</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ural w<strong>at</strong>ers, especially <strong>the</strong> imit<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> those<br />
which contain but little carbonic acid gas, manufactured<br />
Epsom, Seidlitz <strong>or</strong> Cheltenham salts are but little inferi<strong>or</strong><br />
in efficacy to those procured from <strong>the</strong> <strong>springs</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves,<br />
and are very commonly usedjin <strong>the</strong> <strong>or</strong>dinary practice <strong>of</strong>medicine.<br />
