province, defending it from <strong>the</strong> sun. The beavers<br />

f<strong>or</strong>merly held possession <strong>of</strong> all this neighbourhood,<br />

and many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir little residences in<br />

<strong>the</strong> shape <strong>of</strong><br />

bee-hives are still to be seen here. The dam <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Falls was fashioned by <strong>the</strong>ir own hands, and here<br />

<strong>the</strong>y lived, until poetry and n<strong>at</strong>ure, giving way to<br />

civiliz<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>the</strong> beavers left <strong>the</strong> country, <strong>or</strong> were<br />

anniliil<strong>at</strong>ed.<br />

So romantic a place can hardly have failed to<br />

have given rise to tales <strong>of</strong> love and romance. Connected<br />

with its celebrity, is an incident <strong>of</strong> life <strong>of</strong><br />

recent occurrence, which is here written in verse.
