Monday,<br />
We are four in our cabin ; C. and I. occupying<br />
one room, and having our front room to receive<br />
visit<strong>or</strong>s, and our piazza f<strong>or</strong> our music saloon.<br />
We<br />
are much better <strong>of</strong>f than many <strong>of</strong> our acquaintances<br />
in <strong>Virginia</strong> yov^, where <strong>the</strong>y have but two apartments<br />
in each cabin.<br />
We <strong>at</strong>tended divine service on Sunday, in <strong>the</strong><br />
ball room, <strong>at</strong> eleven o'clock. There is no regular<br />
minister here, but generally some one is present, to<br />
<strong>of</strong>fici<strong>at</strong>e on each Sabb<strong>at</strong>h. The day is very religiously<br />
observed, m<strong>or</strong>e so than <strong>at</strong> most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> noi <strong>the</strong>rn<br />
w<strong>at</strong>ering places, which is saying a good deal f<strong>or</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> high tone and m<strong>or</strong>al sense<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> company, and<br />
in <strong>the</strong> midst <strong>of</strong> all our pleasures, <strong>the</strong>re is no little to be<br />
admired <strong>at</strong> it.<br />
Wanting some barege f<strong>or</strong> veils this m<strong>or</strong>ning, C.<br />
and I. went over to <strong>the</strong> st<strong>or</strong>e, which is kept in <strong>the</strong><br />
c<strong>or</strong>ner <strong>of</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> row. When we entered, v/e<br />
found <strong>the</strong> only person in <strong>at</strong>tendance, <strong>the</strong>n assisting<br />
a lady in trying a pair <strong>of</strong> gloves on a little boy <strong>of</strong><br />
five years old, who persisted most pertinaceously in<br />
thrusting his four fingers<br />
into th<strong>at</strong> part intended f<strong>or</strong><br />
his thumb alone, so we had time to look about us <strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> many fanciful things which were arranged r<strong>at</strong>her<br />
promiscuously on <strong>the</strong> shelves : dry goods, buttons,<br />
nails, laces, silks, shoes, artificial flowers, perfumery,<br />
jewelry, and in sh<strong>or</strong>t, every thing which could b«
