JOURNAL OF A LADY. JJOi<br />

and this was <strong>the</strong>ir farewell ball ; we lose <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

departure some <strong>of</strong> our most esteemed acquaintances,<br />

who have joined with us in all our sp<strong>or</strong>ts f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> last<br />

six weeks. This is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> h<strong>or</strong>r<strong>or</strong>s <strong>of</strong> a w<strong>at</strong>ering<br />

place : <strong>the</strong> parting with friends with w^hom we have<br />

been thrown toge<strong>the</strong>r in so many intim<strong>at</strong>e ways<br />

during <strong>the</strong> season, and friendships thus f<strong>or</strong>med by<br />

persons who are strangers on <strong>the</strong>ir first meeting, are<br />

generally <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most agreeable and endearing kind,<br />

and <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>the</strong> most lasting.<br />

We have had much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scene <strong>of</strong> last night bef<strong>or</strong>e<br />

us, in our cabin this m<strong>or</strong>ning, from <strong>the</strong><br />

amuseing<br />

descriptions <strong>of</strong> persons and things, by P .<br />

He is<br />

a gre<strong>at</strong> caric<strong>at</strong>urist, but is very good n<strong>at</strong>ured.<br />

This is a talent which is entertaining <strong>at</strong> times, when<br />

not too far indulged in, <strong>or</strong> too much encouraged.<br />

He says <strong>the</strong>re was no room f<strong>or</strong> him to dance, so he<br />

took his st<strong>at</strong>ion by <strong>the</strong> piano as an observer.<br />

He described all <strong>the</strong> elderly ladies se<strong>at</strong>ed round<br />

<strong>the</strong> room on <strong>the</strong> settees, with <strong>the</strong>ir blonde caps, giving:<br />

countenance to <strong>the</strong> dance, and with <strong>the</strong><br />

double<br />

view <strong>of</strong> engaging <strong>the</strong> <strong>at</strong>tention <strong>of</strong> a distinguished<br />

Bachel<strong>or</strong>. The young women who stand in each<br />

recess in groups, knowing no partner, and not dancuig,<br />

he styles as wall-flowers. He decries most vehemently<br />

against gentlemen carrying <strong>the</strong>ir h<strong>at</strong>s in <strong>the</strong><br />

cotillion, as a mark <strong>of</strong> indifierence to <strong>the</strong>ir partners
