<strong>the</strong> country <strong>the</strong>y were going to, and wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y<br />

intended to do, when <strong>the</strong>y got <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

I came upon a party one day, who had been bivouacing,on<br />

<strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> way; it turned out to be a<br />

whole neighbourhood, from one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eastern counties<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>, on <strong>the</strong>ir way to Ilhnois.<br />

with <strong>the</strong>m all<br />

They had<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir farming utensils and furniturespinning<br />

wheels, churns, and <strong>the</strong> like. The boys (a<br />

dollars among <strong>the</strong>m, and were going to buy<br />

and cultiv<strong>at</strong>e new lands in Illinois. The old man<br />

was quite pleased and surprised, when I mentioned<br />

him, he said, "Do you hear th<strong>at</strong>, sir—th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> king<br />

<strong>of</strong> China was a farmer? and if you keep straight,<br />

you may be <strong>the</strong> president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United St<strong>at</strong>es yet"<br />

-nothing m<strong>or</strong>e true than <strong>the</strong> old man's last remark;
