SKETCHES OF CHARACTER. 149<br />
Duncan is a hero, and I had almost f<strong>or</strong>gotten<br />
him, though he never f<strong>or</strong>gets <strong>the</strong> lodgers in Alabama<br />
Row, which is his province, and so faithful and<br />
<strong>at</strong>tentive th<strong>at</strong> he never leaves it.<br />
Ge<strong>or</strong>gia Row is<br />
only a sh<strong>or</strong>t distance <strong>of</strong>f; but he knows about as<br />
much <strong>of</strong> its precincts as he would <strong>of</strong> th<strong>at</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e, if<br />
questioned.<br />
He boasts <strong>of</strong> Scotch descent;<br />
on his tongue :<br />
and has <strong>the</strong> twang<br />
this perhaps, accounts f<strong>or</strong> his superstitious<br />
dread <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jack O'Malanterns wliich are<br />
seen about <strong>the</strong> Spring <strong>of</strong> dark nights:<br />
he calls <strong>the</strong>m<br />
gre<strong>at</strong> misleaders.<br />
Duncan expects a rich harvest next summer <strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>White</strong> <strong>Sulphur</strong>.<br />
