Duncan is a hero, and I had almost forgotten
him, though he never forgets the lodgers in Alabama
Row, which is his province, and so faithful and
attentive that he never leaves it.
Georgia Row is
only a short distance off; but he knows about as
much of its precincts as he would of that state, if
questioned.
He boasts of Scotch descent;
on his tongue :
and has the twang
this perhaps, accounts for his superstitious
dread of the Jack O'Malanterns wliich are
seen about the Spring of dark nights:
he calls them
great misleaders.
Duncan expects a rich harvest next summer at
the White Sulphur.
