The Resource Kit on Promoting Resource Efficiency in SMEs (PRE-SME) is the product of a
broad collaborative effort by a number of partner institutions. Such a broad exercise was made
possible thanks to the generous financial support of the Norwegian Government. Regional workshops
and test pilot implementation in Ethiopia and Vietnam were two key initiatives used as a
platform for the development of the Resource Kit. In this context, we would like to recognise the
important contribution that was made by the national government agencies, the two National
Cleaner Production Centres (NCPCs), technical support institutions, individual experts and the
industries that participated in these initiatives and provided significant feedback towards refining
the content of the Resource Kit. Special recognition goes to the NCPCs and other regional
technical organisations that participated in the Africa and the Asia-Pacific regional workshops,
providing valuable contributions in reviewing the structure and content of the Resource Kit.
Besides the existing tools, guidelines and reference materials previously produced by UNEP
and UNIDO, the kit has significantly benefited from materials produced by other international
technical institutions working on related topics. The substantive and technical materials were
developed by the Association to Foster Recycling & Environmental Protection in Austria (AREC)
while the pedagogical and interactive structure of the kit was developed by the Asia Society for
Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST).
We would also like to thank Erica Allis, Cristina Battaglino, Liazzat Rabbiosi and the NCPCs of
Vietnam and Ethiopia for providing many of the photographs included in this handbook.
