in the physical description <strong>and</strong> note areas based on the item as issued by the publisher,<br />

rather than as bound after publication.<br />

Updating Loose-Leafs<br />

If the updating loose-leaf consisted <strong>of</strong> both numbered <strong>and</strong> unnumbered<br />

volumes, record in the extent statement the <strong>to</strong>tal number <strong>of</strong> volumes. If it is important<br />

<strong>to</strong> indicate the presence <strong>of</strong> unnumbered volumes, make a note (see <strong>rule</strong> 12.7B12). Prior <strong>to</strong><br />

Dec. 1, 2002, only the numbered volumes were recorded in the extent statement.<br />

LC/PCC practice for integrating resources: Apply this <strong>rule</strong> only when there<br />

are multiple parts in the same iteration that differ in size. If the size <strong>of</strong> the part<br />

changes on a subsequent iteration, update this information based on that iteration.<br />

Serials: In Numbered Series<br />

Record the number <strong>of</strong> the series in the series statement in the three<br />

situations listed below. PCC practice: Include the number in the series added entry for<br />

the first <strong>and</strong> second situations; see the specific instruction for the third situation.<br />

Examples illustrate PCC practice.<br />

1) a single issue <strong>of</strong> a serial is in a series;<br />

490 $3 v. 1: $a Contributions in seismology ; $v no. 13<br />

830 $a Contributions in seismology ; $v no. 13.<br />

2) a known span <strong>of</strong> issues <strong>of</strong> a serial is in a span <strong>of</strong> consecutive<br />

numbers <strong>of</strong> a series;
