e) Series area: open entry multipart items in series (4XX). When a<br />

multipart item itself is in a series <strong>and</strong> the multipart item is classified as a<br />

collection, record the numbering <strong>of</strong> the series in the collected set record according <strong>to</strong><br />

the following <strong>guide</strong>lines until the multipart item is complete.<br />

1) Record the series numbering for the first or last volume as<br />

permanent data, i.e., not within angle brackets.<br />

2) Record all the series numbering as permanent data when the<br />

first or last volume is in h<strong>and</strong> with other consecutive volumes <strong>of</strong> the multipart item <strong>and</strong><br />

the series numbering is scattered.<br />

3) In all other situations, record the series numbering as<br />

temporary data, i.e., within angle brackets.<br />

Use a hyphen <strong>to</strong> separate consecutive numbers <strong>and</strong> a comma <strong>to</strong> separate<br />

scattered numbers. When the multipart item is complete, show all numbering as permanent<br />

data.<br />
