Part II. Methodology<br />
This third part of the manual discusses ways of designing and carrying out <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> that<br />
are particularly useful <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> examining <str<strong>on</strong>g>value</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>chain</str<strong>on</strong>g>s. It is impossible to include in a manual<br />
such as this a detailed treatment of <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> designs and complex methods such as survey<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> or participant observati<strong>on</strong>. 7 We have, however, added an Appendix which gives<br />
an introducti<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> design and methods. You may also find it useful if you need a<br />
refresher.<br />
The main messages of Part II of this manual are:<br />
• be driven by the questi<strong>on</strong>(s) you seek to answer and not the method;<br />
• often the most effective way of answering your questi<strong>on</strong> is to use a combinati<strong>on</strong> of<br />
methods and sources;<br />
• <str<strong>on</strong>g>chain</str<strong>on</strong>g> analysis is mainly about relati<strong>on</strong>ships; hear both sides of the story;<br />
• feed your analysis back to the stakeholders; it helps to bring about change;<br />
• mapping gives power: it helps to show up bottlenecks, inequities and leverage points<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> acti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
8. Mapping the <str<strong>on</strong>g>chain</str<strong>on</strong>g>: first principles<br />
Mapping a <str<strong>on</strong>g>chain</str<strong>on</strong>g> means giving a visual representati<strong>on</strong> of the c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>s between actors.<br />
In its simplest <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>m it is merely a flow diagram. More sophisticated versi<strong>on</strong>s show that<br />
some actors (enterprises) differ in size and that some c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>s are more important than<br />
others; and they help to identify bottlenecks and leverage points. Chain maps help to get<br />
a quick grasp of complicated realities. C<strong>on</strong>structing a map, however, is not a quick job.<br />
How l<strong>on</strong>g it takes depends <strong>on</strong> how much you already know about the enterprises and<br />
workers whose place in the global ec<strong>on</strong>omy you try to capture.<br />

If you need to dig deeper, c<strong>on</strong>sult <strong>on</strong>e or two <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> methods text books that will give a more detailed<br />
treatment of the methods you will be using. If possible, <strong>on</strong>e of these books should be from the country<br />
or regi<strong>on</strong> in which you are working, as such books are more likely than standard northern texts to give<br />
relevant examples and culturally appropriate advice.<br />
