Wolfgang Haberbauer is the first
member of the Coryphaena club
C
oryphaena is our new award for exceptional performances at Sappi
Fine Paper Europe. This will not be a regular or frequent accolade. It
can be awarded at any moment to any colleague in any position
with just one condition: their achievement must be truly special.
The winners join a club with lifetime membership – the Coryphaena club.
For now, it has one member: Wolfgang Haberbauer, our Export Sales Director.
He received the award at our management conference held
in Mainz in October. Everybody in the room knew how much
Wolfgang deserved his recognition. Handing over the
beautiful glass sculpture, our CEO Berry Wiersum stated:
“Wolfgang has saved our company from serious losses on
several occasions.”
This is no exaggeration. Wolfgang is a master of conjuring
up new business from nowhere with overseas clients. He does
such a good job that we can’t sell enough paper in Europe. The
tons of paper involved are considerable and demonstrate his
incredible achievements.
OUR MAN
OVERSEAS
almost 30 years ago at
(what was then) Leykam’s
sales office in Vienna.
He took charge of the
export markets almost
immediately. Gratkorn’s
PM9 was about to
start up and it doubled
Leykam’s capacity. Export
markets were needed
and Wolfgang was the
man to build them up.
He immediately moved
away from the trader’s
business, building
direct relationships with
merchants and printers in
countries around the world
instead. This network is
the basis for our lasting
success in overseas.
Focus on
exceptional
performance
The Sappi group has a long history of recognising its people for exceptional performance, whether this performance is
safety, innovation, efficiency or service related. One such example is the Sappi Coryphaena Award established by Sappi
Fine Paper Europe to recognise truly exceptional achievements. Any member of staff can nominate a colleague but the
award will only be made when the selection panel is convinced of the exceptional nature of the person’s achievements,
including consistently high performance over many years. The trophy awarded to the recipient is a masterpiece created
by the famous Venetian glass master, Pino Signoretto. The sculpture is in the shape of a book and contains a feather
to symbolise the modest pride that every winner should have. It comes together with a beautiful tie or scarf with the
feather motive in recognition of the constant support from the recipient’s partner. The continued commitment of Sappi’s
staff has helped to pull the company through recent challenging times and position the company for future growth.
