State Historic Preservation Office<br />

The Idaho SHPO is a division of the Idaho State <strong>Historical</strong> Society (ISHS) <strong>and</strong> functions on a<br />

grant from the NPS. The Idaho SHPO operates in six program areas:<br />

National Register of Historic Places Program;<br />

State historic <strong>and</strong> archaeological sites inventories;<br />

Certified local <strong>gov</strong>ernment (CLG) grants management;<br />

Preservation planning;<br />

Federal historic preservation project review (Section 106 Review)<br />

Inventory <strong>and</strong> evaluation (National Register) procedures:<br />

The Idaho SHPO maintains an inventory of more than 50,000 historic <strong>and</strong> archaeological site<br />

records, which are available to agencies for research <strong>and</strong> evaluation of potential project<br />

effects on cultural resources.<br />

State preservation plan:<br />

The Idaho State preservation plan is entitled A View to the Future <strong>and</strong> serves as a general<br />

guide for local <strong>gov</strong>ernments, historical societies, <strong>and</strong> individuals interested in Idaho’s<br />

history. The current plan (2008) is accessible at: http://history.idaho.<strong>gov</strong>/<br />

documents/2008PreservationPlan.pdf. The plan has ten stated goals that range from<br />

conducting inventory surveys to promoting training.<br />

Resources for identifying locations of cultural resources (GIS, web, database, etc.):<br />

Site file searches can be conducted upon application with the SHPO <strong>and</strong> returned to the<br />

applicant via e-mail.<br />

Guidance to Federal agencies for 106 <strong>and</strong> other compliance:<br />

No additional guidance is provided beyond normal 36 CFR 800 procedures.<br />

Special forms for SHPO 106 notification or identified cultural resources:<br />

Requirements for research reports Idaho are contained in Guidelines for Documenting<br />

<strong>Archaeological</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Historical</strong> Surveys, which provides requirements <strong>and</strong> guidance for<br />

completing reports <strong>and</strong> forms including: site report form, archaeology site inventory form;<br />

<strong>and</strong> determination of eligibility form. The forms can be downloaded from the agency<br />

website.<br />

Qualifications for cultural resources specialists:<br />

Idaho does not maintain a list of qualified cultural resources specialists.<br />
