Avalon. Annette Funicello. Deboiali Walley.
How my small town boys love these beach
pictures! Same as the others: ridiculous
plot, pathetic acting and corny dialog. It
must be the beautiful, very easy to look
at "scenery" that brings them in. Music in
this one much better. Frankie and DeDe
sing very well together. This little dandy
was the biggest grosser of the month,
which included "Cheyenne Autumn," Cleopatra."
"Brigitte" and "Cheatin' Heart,"
all of which did above average. Played
Thurs., Fri.. Sat.—Bill Curran, Ramona
Theatre, Kremmling. Colo.
BUENA VISTA
Those Galloways iBV) — Brian Keith.
Vera Miles. Brandon de Wilde. This did
not set any attendance records, but the
finest photography and one of the best
family pictmes to come out of Holly^vood
in ages. Disney does it again! Played
Thurs.. Fri.. Sat. Weather: Hot and humid.
Ten-y Axley. New Theatre. England. Ai-k
Pop. 2.136.
COLUMBIA
Bye Bye Birdie iCoIi — Janet Leigh,
Dick Van Dyke. Ann-Margret. Our second
repeat of this film turned out to be the
best result, due to the music department at
school getting interested in it. Played Wed.
—Aithui- K. Dame, Scenic Theatre. Pittsfield
N. H. Pop. 2,321.
Major Dundee
' Col) —Charlton Heston,
Richard Hanis, Jim Hutton, Pi-om a production
point, this is made well enough.
The appeal, however, is 'way down in this
situation. Didn't go far enough to pay the
expenses. Played Thm-s., Fri., Sat.—C A
Swiercinsky, Major Theatre, Washington
Kas.
METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER
Advance to the Rear (MGM) — Glenn
Ford. Stella Stevens. Melvyn Douglas I
passed this up for a long time 'When I
finally played it, I was suiprised to see
that It pleased all who like slapstick
comedy. Very good. Played Thm-s Pi-i
Weather: Good.—W. S. Funk, Star The-
WRITE—
TO:
OscoT for James Stewart
Suggested by Patrons
"Shenandoah" is excellent. Had
nothing but praise for James Stewart.
The words "Oscar nomination" kept
coming up.
MARINUS
Kissin' Cousins (MGM)—Elvis Pi'esley,
Pamela Austin, Yvonne Ci-aig. We passed
this up the first time around but were
pleasantly surprised to have it do slightly
above average at this late date. A good bet
in a small town. Played Thurs., Fri., Sat.
Weather: Clear.—C. D. Simmons, Grace
Theatre, Grace, Ida.
36 Hours iMGM)—James Gamer. Rod
Taylor. Eva Marie Saint. Used this as a
benefit and so got by. It's not as fast or
good as we anticipated, however. Played
Wed—Ai'thm- K. Dame. Scenic Theatre.
Pittsfield, N. H. Pop. 2,321.
PARAMOUNT
Boy Ten Feet Tall, A (Para)—Edward
G. Robinson, Fergus McClelland, Constance
Cummings. This is a good show. Had more
kids than adults. The run was only fair.
Played Thm-s., Fri., Sat.—C. A. Swiercinsky.
Major Theatre, Washington, Kas.
Circus World (Para) —John Wayne. Rita
Hayworth, Claudia Cardinale. Top stars,
fabulous visual effects, color, Wayne in the
kind of role he is famous for—and no
business. Ads in the Paramount pressbook
were terrible. Used some of them and made
some of my own. Still nothing. One yomigster
mentioned that he doesn't like circus
shows anymore—too much "International
Showtime" on TV. Played Thm-s., Fri., Sat.
Weather: Warm.—James A. Manuel, Geitner
Theatre, Silver Ci-eek, N. Y. Pop. 3,200.
In Harm's Way (Para)—John Wayne.
Kirk Douglas, Patricia Neal. In Preminger's
way, this did business. Wish I had more
like it. Played Sun. through Wed. Weather:
Weather
— Right Now
Hot and clear.—Lew Bray jr.. Texas Theatre.
Pharr, Tex. Pop. 14.000.
20TH CENTURY-FOX
Cleopatra i20th-Foxi — Elizabeth Taylor,
Rex Harrison, Richard Bmton. This picture
played first in a nearby town. Our
patrons did not attend in large nimibers.
Business was below average. Played Thurs.,
Fri., Sat. Weather: Clear.—C. D. Simmons,
Grace Theatre, Grace. Ida.
Dear Brigitte (20th-Fox) —James Stewart.
Glynis Johns. Fabian. An excellent picture
that failed to do business. Ttile hm-t
it here. If 20th-Fox would change the title,
I'd play it again. Played Thm-s., Fri., Sat.
S. T. Jackson, Jackson Theatre, Flomaton,
Ala. Pop. 1,480.
UNITED ARTISTS
Lilies of the Field 'UA—Reissue)—Sidney
Potier, Lilia Skala, Lisa Mann. A repeat
of the most wonderful of pictures. I
think if the movies never had a reason
before for existing, this heart warming
message is reason enough. Played Wed.
—Arthm- K. Dame, Scenic Theatre, Pittsfield.
N.H. Pop. 2,321.
UNIVERSAL
Dream Maker, The (Univ) — Tommy
Steele, Michael Medwin, Jean Harvey. This
is a piece of English rock and roll nonsense.
Accent too thick, plot too thin.
Why make a di-eam maker? Played Fri.,
Sat. Weather: Good.—W. S. Funk, Kingstreee
Drive-In, Kingstree, S.C. Pop 3,500.
Flower Drum Song (Univ — Reissue) —
Nancy Kwan, Miyoshi Umeki, James Shigeta.
A reissue that has plenty of punch
to it. Lots of adults tm-ned out for a betterthan-average
midweek. Played Tues., Wed.
Weather: Wai-m.—James A. Manuel, Geitner
Theatre, Silver Creek, N.Y. Pop. 3,200.
Strange Bedfellows (Univ)—Rock Hudson,
Gina Lollobrigida, Gig Young. A good
crowd-pleaser for an average gross. Had
nice color, some good laughs. Better than
expected at the boxoffice. We broke even.
Played Sun., Mon. — Leonard J. Leise,
Roxy Theatre, Randolph, Neb. Pop. 1,029.
Truth About Spring, The (Univ)—Hayley
Mills, John Mills, James MacArthur.
Cute pictm-e and pleased, but draw not
up to "Fluffy." G
