atres do. however, use /, 1.8 or //1.9 and
obtain fairly sharp image, provided the
lens is one of the modern types. New theatre
installations should have several sets
of projection lens—namely. //2.4. //I.9.
/ 1.7 and //1. 8 —and should select the
speed and type best suited for brilliant
picture for both widescreen and Cinema-
Scope projection, assuring the .same satisfactory
illumination for either ratio. Lens
manufacturers and theatre supply dealers
will be happy to supply these for your selection.
SELECTING PROJECTION LENSES
Before we proceed further in discussion
of various types of projection lenses to
fit \arious situations, let us tell you about
the lens speeds that were selected for the
new Gaylynn Theatre, which opened May
27 in Houston. The Gaylynn projects to a
deep-curved Cinerama screen of 74 Va foot
chord and 34 '2 foot high, at a distance
of 159 feet i20-feet sc'-een depth). Using
specially tested lenses of differing speeds,
the result was a 70mm picture of 71 foot
chord. Cinemascope pictm'e of 67 foot
chord, and 35mm flat picture of 54 foot
chord, and all at the same center illumination.
Lens speeds are //2.4, f/1.9 and
/ 1.7x. In the latter case, a new Kollmorgen
adjustable Magna-com was used on an
//1.7 lens for the combination of sharpness,
speed, and rapid aperture plate fitting.
Furnishing an assortment of 20 projection
lenses to achieve the proper size, focus
and illuminatioii, was Glenn Berggren of
Kollmorgen Corp. The object of such a
large assortment of projection lenses was
to select speeds that would give good overall
screen illumination — plus the same
screen brightness—for the various screen
ratios. This was achieved using the above
lens speeds before the theatre opened.
This can also be accomplished in many
theatres that need more light for flat pictui-es.
SHORT FOCAL LENGTH LENS
Changes in theatre concept have created
new demands on theatre equipment. In
the lens field, the major area of attention
has been to short focal length lenses and
to lenses of greater stability and focus
sharpness. Manufacturers have now met
this demand, and one can now obtain a
much sharper focused image with greatly
improved short-focal projection lenses in
nearly all situations.
In recent years, the trend has been to
wider and wider pictui-es in indoor and
under-the-sky theatres. This was accelerated
by the general use of anamorphic
lenses and by the use of 70mm projection.
New light sources for projection have been
developed with higher and more uniform
illumination.
The earlier screens of 30 years ago were
in the 20- and 30-foot size, with a few
larger in de luxe theatres. These have now
swelled to the 40- and 50-foot range and
