Fogarty International Center for Advanced Studies <strong>in</strong> Health Sciences<br />
The Fogarty International Center for Advanced Studies <strong>in</strong> Health Sciences is the<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational branch of the US National Institutes of Health. Its mission is to<br />
address global health challenges through <strong>in</strong>novative and collaborative research and<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programs and to support the NIH, on the basis of <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
partnerships.<br />
Founded <strong>in</strong> 1968 by Presidential Order, the Fogarty International Centre has grown<br />
to have an <strong>in</strong>ternational output of $64 million budget for research, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, and<br />
capacity build<strong>in</strong>g, extend<strong>in</strong>g to over 100 countries and <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g some 5,000<br />
scientists <strong>in</strong> the U.S. and abroad.<br />
The Fogarty International Center is implement<strong>in</strong>g a collaborative bioethics project<br />
called “Strengthen<strong>in</strong>g Bioethics capacity and Justice <strong>in</strong> Health”, which aims to<br />
promote research ethics and bioethics <strong>in</strong> the Democratic Republic of Congo and <strong>in</strong><br />
Francophone Africa.<br />
Partners of this four-year project are: the University of North Carol<strong>in</strong>a at Chapel<br />
Hill (USA), the University of Louva<strong>in</strong> (Belgium) and the University of K<strong>in</strong>shasa<br />
(Democratic Republic of Congo).<br />
A group of selected Congolese scholars will receive a research and medical ethics<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at the University of Louva<strong>in</strong> and at UNC-Chapel Hill, to permit them at<br />
their return to K<strong>in</strong>shasa, to create a new Bioethics Center at the K<strong>in</strong>shasa School of<br />
Public Health. This newborn Bioethics Center will have a local, regional and<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational impact <strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g ethics and bioethics with their <strong>in</strong>clusion <strong>in</strong><br />
courses <strong>in</strong>to the MPH degree programme. It will also organize conferences and<br />
workshops, establish a bioethics resource center, offer bioethics consultation to<br />
research and health <strong>in</strong>stitutions and conduct bioethics research.<br />
Scholars com<strong>in</strong>g from Francophone Africa will be <strong>in</strong>vited at the K<strong>in</strong>shasa Bioethics<br />
Center for <strong>in</strong>tensive bioethics workshops.<br />
An English Bioethics Blog is part of this project, which will help to promote<br />
reflection on bioethics and research ethics <strong>in</strong> Sub-Saharan Africa.<br />
