reference of the Islamic world and <strong>in</strong> the light of the human Islamic values and<br />

IBEST, the Islamic Body on Ethics of Science and Technology is an ISESCO body that<br />
evaluates scientific researches and applications, <strong>in</strong> accordance with the Islamic<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and morals. It was established dur<strong>in</strong>g the First Islamic Conference of<br />
M<strong>in</strong>isters of Higher Education and Scientific and <strong>Research</strong>, held <strong>in</strong> Saudi Arabia <strong>in</strong><br />
October 2000.<br />
Based on the Islamic Sharia, it aims to direct public Muslim op<strong>in</strong>ion regard<strong>in</strong>g some<br />
important ethical issues; to analyze scientific and technical progress; to contribute<br />
towards coord<strong>in</strong>ation and exchange of op<strong>in</strong>ions among national committees on<br />
ethics of science and new technologies; to build Islamic consensus on ethical issues;<br />
to study issues related to medic<strong>in</strong>e and biology such as: artificial <strong>in</strong>sem<strong>in</strong>ation,<br />
clon<strong>in</strong>g, environmental issues, <strong>in</strong>formatics and other topical, crucial issues, <strong>in</strong> the<br />
light of the Islamic as well as the human ethical norms at large; to promote the<br />
<strong>in</strong>sertion of ethics <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g curricula, <strong>in</strong> order to underl<strong>in</strong>e the respect for ethical<br />
norms and pr<strong>in</strong>ciples.<br />
Practically, IBEST work is to: set up databases, with national and <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
<strong>in</strong>itiatives performed <strong>in</strong> Islamic countries; to face problematic ethical issue from an<br />
Islamic po<strong>in</strong>t of view; to <strong>in</strong>vestigate new and emerg<strong>in</strong>g ethical issues; to organize<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational conferences; to promote awareness on ethical issues with the teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of ethics <strong>in</strong> educational and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes; to encourage the creation of<br />
ethics committees to review ethical concerns and research <strong>in</strong> Islamic countries; to<br />
conduct media campaign, publish guidel<strong>in</strong>es, books, articles.<br />
IBEST works <strong>in</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>ation with regional and <strong>in</strong>ternational organizations and<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutions, <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the study of ethics of science and technology and closely<br />
collaborates with national ethics committee <strong>in</strong> its Member States.<br />

Islamic Medical Association of Northern America<br />
IMANA<br />
The Muslim Medical Association was founded <strong>in</strong> 1967 dur<strong>in</strong>g the annual meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of the Muslim Students Association (MSA), as a branch of MSA. A year later dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the first <strong>in</strong>dependent convention of MSA of USA and Canada, IMANA was<br />
established after the writ<strong>in</strong>g of a Constitution and the development of its logo.<br />
IMANA aims to provide a forum and resources for Muslim physicians and people<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> health care, promot<strong>in</strong>g Islam medical ethics and values <strong>in</strong> the<br />
community. It also aims to be a leader <strong>in</strong> national and <strong>in</strong>ternational global health<br />
care, on the basis of the Islamic perspective.<br />
