“Students <strong>in</strong> <strong>Research</strong>” modules <strong>in</strong> collaboration with the Collaborative Institutional<br />
Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Initiative – CITI. In the recent past years, WAB has organized tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
course and conferences on different issues, such as the Six Weeks Intensive Course<br />
on Modern International <strong>Research</strong> Ethics (2007) and the African Health <strong>Research</strong><br />
Ethics Symposium (2006).<br />

World Health Organization Ethics and Health<br />
With<strong>in</strong> WHO, various Departments are <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> ethical issues related to medical<br />
research and regulatory mechanisms of medical research. The Department of Ethics,<br />
Equity, Trade and Human Rights, <strong>in</strong> the Information, <strong>Research</strong> and Evidence cluster<br />
(IER/ETH), created <strong>in</strong> 2002, advances the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of dignity, justice, and security<br />
<strong>in</strong> health and oversees that these pr<strong>in</strong>ciples are <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong>to programmes and<br />
policies across WHO, to foster effective global, and national action based on these<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ciples.<br />
Through the U.N. Inter-Agency Committee on Bioethics, the unit also has liaison<br />
relations with the ethics offices of other United Nations agencies as well as<br />
governmental and nongovernmental organizations deal<strong>in</strong>g with bioethics issues,<br />
such as FAO, ILO, UNHCHR, UNESCO, WIPO.<br />

WHO - Department of <strong>Research</strong> Policy and Cooperation<br />
The Department of <strong>Research</strong> Policy and Cooperation is part of WHO’s Information,<br />
Evidence and <strong>Research</strong> (IER) Cluster and it helps to re<strong>in</strong>force the <strong>in</strong>formational,<br />
scientific and ethical issues of health research. Its major aim is to ensure the<br />
development of health systems <strong>in</strong> poor resource sett<strong>in</strong>gs. The ma<strong>in</strong> objectives of the<br />
department are: to encourage better use of evidence <strong>in</strong> health decision mak<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
policy development; to strengthen health systems research; to promote good<br />
research practices through the coord<strong>in</strong>ation of mechanism, guidel<strong>in</strong>es and<br />
