Good Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Practices (GCP) Inspection Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Course<br />

The course was delivered on 25-29 June 2007 <strong>in</strong> Harare, Zimbabwe for the first<br />

time and organized by WHO utiliz<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g material prepared by the Develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Countries</strong>’ Vacc<strong>in</strong>e Regulatory Network (DCVRN).<br />

The objective of the course is ma<strong>in</strong>ly to give to participants the capacity: to plan,<br />

coord<strong>in</strong>ate and conduct a GCP <strong>in</strong>spection; to identify observations and deviations;<br />

to take decisions on the basis of GCP standards; to report the outcome of the study<br />

to the sponsor cl<strong>in</strong>ical trial site. The <strong>in</strong>structional material development was done<br />

<strong>in</strong> collaboration with the National Department of Health, Medic<strong>in</strong>es Regulatory<br />

Affairs <strong>in</strong> South Africa, National Agency of Drug and Food Control of Indonesia, the<br />

Collaborative Centre on Cold Cha<strong>in</strong> Management <strong>in</strong> South Africa, University of<br />

Cape Town and the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Health <strong>in</strong> Turkey. The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course has been<br />

developed for 27 hours us<strong>in</strong>g different teach<strong>in</strong>g methods: illustrated lectures,<br />

demonstrations, bra<strong>in</strong>storm<strong>in</strong>g, work <strong>in</strong> groups, role-plays, simulations and<br />

exercises.<br />

Representatives from National Regulatory Authorities have participated <strong>in</strong> this<br />

course, com<strong>in</strong>g from Botswana (1), Ethiopia (2), Gambia (1), Ghana (1), Malawi (2),<br />

Nigeria (1), Tanzania (1), Uganda (1), Zimbabwe (8), and Mozambique (1).<br />

Health <strong>Research</strong> Ethics Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Initiative <strong>in</strong> Egypt<br />

HRETIE<br />

The Health <strong>Research</strong> Ethics Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Initiative <strong>in</strong> Egypt (HRETIE) is a project<br />

sponsored by the Fogarty International Centre of the NIH and conducted <strong>in</strong><br />

collaboration with the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medic<strong>in</strong>e of the<br />

University of Maryland School of Medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

The purpose of HRETIE is to promote susta<strong>in</strong>able research ethics capacity and career<br />

development <strong>in</strong> research ethics by <strong>in</strong>stitutions and <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong> Egypt.<br />

The HRETIE <strong>in</strong>cludes a twelve months Certificate Programme, with two months<br />

stage at the University of Maryland and a ten months project to be carried out <strong>in</strong><br />
