West African Bioethics Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Programme<br />

WAB<br />

The West African Bioethics is a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programme based at the University of<br />

Ibadan, Nigeria, which provides postgraduate degree courses <strong>in</strong> bioethics both for<br />

English and French speak<strong>in</strong>g people.<br />

The multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programme <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational research bioethics is<br />

designed for mid-career professionals who are members of health research ethics<br />

committees or <strong>in</strong>stitutional review boards/committees, lecturers or <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />

nom<strong>in</strong>ated by their <strong>in</strong>stitutions to develop <strong>in</strong>stitutional education programs <strong>in</strong><br />

bioethics, health research committee adm<strong>in</strong>istrators and anybody who has an<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> research ethics.<br />

The goal of this program is to create a cadre of <strong>in</strong>dividuals capable of serv<strong>in</strong>g at the<br />

highest levels <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutional health research ethics committees, adm<strong>in</strong>ister health<br />

research ethics committees, tra<strong>in</strong> others <strong>in</strong> the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of modern research ethics,<br />

conduct research <strong>in</strong> research ethics and provide ethics consultation. This<br />

postgraduate program aims to build capacity for the ethical review of health<br />

research and to strengthen the capacity of the Ethics Committees <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions<br />

throughout West Africa. Furthermore, it aims to produce bioethics experts who can<br />

contribute to the global bioethics discourse from a West African perspective<br />

The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is provided by faculty from University of Ibadan, the Dom<strong>in</strong>ican<br />

Institute and <strong>in</strong>ternational experts <strong>in</strong> bioethics and it is designed <strong>in</strong> modules, <strong>in</strong> order<br />

to allow the participation to each short core-course. The core-programs <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

<strong>in</strong>formed consent, research ethics and ethics committees’ functions and<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istration, culture, religion and ethics, research designs, research methods,<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g methods <strong>in</strong> bioethics and ethics and research <strong>in</strong>tegrity. Noncore<br />

programs <strong>in</strong>clude: ethics <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational collaborative research, ethical issues<br />

<strong>in</strong> reproductive and population health, negotiation and conflict resolution, health<br />

law and bioethics, human rights, law and bioethics, cl<strong>in</strong>ical bioethics,<br />

environmental ethics, ethics of research with children, ethics of community based<br />

research, bioethics and biotechnology, public health ethics, ethics of research <strong>in</strong><br />

vulnerable populations and mass emergencies, ethics and social and behavioral<br />
