IOMS<br />

The Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences was established <strong>in</strong> 1984 with the aim<br />

to: promote the Islamic Religion and its view of health and treatments for physical<br />

and psychological diseases. It also aims to transmit the Islamic tradition and<br />

heritage <strong>in</strong> the health field, through comparative analysis between modern<br />

technological advances <strong>in</strong> health care and pioneer Muslim physicians studies; to f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

Islamic solutions for diseases, to discover alternative drugs or treatments accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to the Islamic perspective; to cooperate with the <strong>in</strong>ternational and national<br />

organizations, <strong>in</strong>stitutions and societies which are governed by the same pr<strong>in</strong>ciples<br />

of IOMS; to fund health centres worldwide, respond<strong>in</strong>g to the needs of the Muslim<br />

population; to allow the young generation to study the basis of the Islamic heritage,<br />

values, education, <strong>in</strong> particular <strong>in</strong> the field of Medic<strong>in</strong>e; to promote Islamic moral<br />

values for medical professions; to coord<strong>in</strong>ate activities <strong>in</strong> the health field <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Islamic world.<br />

K<strong>in</strong>tampo Health <strong>Research</strong> Center, Ghana<br />

KHRC<br />

K<strong>in</strong>tampo Health <strong>Research</strong> Center is one of three field research centers of the Health<br />

<strong>Research</strong> Unit of Ghana Health Service. It was established <strong>in</strong> 1994 <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

become an African-based research center, the activities of which vary from<br />

biomedical research and human trials to district surveillance and study population.<br />

Its staff comprises researchers, social scientists, laboratory, data management and<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial and account<strong>in</strong>g professionals. Its major objectives are to build capacities<br />

for health and health related personnel, to respond to population needs <strong>in</strong> health<br />

research, to improve quality health care and biomedical research, to ameliorate the<br />

status of people, to allow health professionals to better face the African health<br />

challenges.<br />

The KHRC <strong>in</strong> collaboration with Malaria Vacc<strong>in</strong>e Initiative and PPD, Inc. organized<br />

<strong>in</strong> April 2008 a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course on Good Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Practices (GCP). In May 2008, it<br />

has been awarded the 2008 Pr<strong>in</strong>ce of Asturias Award for International Cooperation<br />

as a recognition of KHRC contribution to the fight aga<strong>in</strong>st malaria <strong>in</strong> sub-Saharan<br />

Africa.<br />
