Current adjustment policies in Bangladesh, coupled with<br />

ongoing industrial restructuring, are expected to create employment<br />

opportunities in export-propelled activities. Data on the short-run<br />

impact of recent industrialization ef<strong>for</strong>ts in Bangladesh indicate that<br />

women constitute the majority of the incremental labour absorption<br />

in the country’s export-oriented manufacturing enterprises. Available<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation also suggests that conventional measures of gender bias<br />

(such as wage gaps, access to employment and lack of job security)<br />

are relatively inconspicuous in this organized segment of the<br />

manufacturing sector (Bhattacharya, 1994). This is true <strong>for</strong><br />

manufacturing units located in both export processing zones (EPZs)<br />

and the domestic tariff area (DTA). It is characteristic of the labour<br />

<strong>for</strong>ce of <strong>for</strong>eign-owned units in particular — which tend to have the<br />

most advanced technology and the highest productivity levels in the<br />

country (Bhattacharya, 1998).<br />

Notwithstanding such ostensibly positive features of part of the<br />

country’s evolving labour market, concerns have been raised about<br />

the real nature and prospects <strong>for</strong> sustainability of these trends. It is<br />
