LOCK COMMUNICATIONS:
Vessels entering or departing the locks at Avonmouth or Royal Portbury should use the
following communications procedures.
(1) Vessels must request permission to enter the lock from Bristol VTS on VHF Ch 12,
prior to commencing their approach.
(2) Vessels should then communicate directly with Avonmouth Lock Control or Portbury
Lock Control on VHF Ch 14.
(3) Vessels departing the lock inward-bound must request permission from Avonmouth
Lock Control or Portbury Lock Control before letting go any mooring lines. Subsequently
they should call Avonmouth Dock Radio or Royal Portbury Dock Radio before moving
ahead for permission to enter the dock, and again when:
(a) The vessel is made fast to a berth
(b) Before shutting down their engines/systems
(4) All vessels (with the exception of harbour tugs and workboats), must request
permission to leave any dock or berth from Avonmouth Dock Radio or Royal Portbury
Dock Radio. The following information must be passed before permission to leave the
berth is granted:
(a) Maximum draught
(b) Next port of call
(c) If piloted, confi rmation that the Master/pilotage exchange has been completed
satisfactorily or;
(d) If not piloted (non-compulsory or pilotage exemption) then confi rmation that a
passage plan has been completed for the immediate voyage
(5) On completion of the previous communication (see (4)) and if the vessel is
proceeding to any lock then it should, before departing the berth, contact Avonmouth
Lock Control or Portbury Lock Control on VHF Ch 14 to ascertain lock status and to
receive other information such as wind speed/direction and position in the lock.
(6) Vessels departing the lock outward-bound must request permission from Bristol
VTS on VHF Ch 12 before letting go any mooring lines.
Notes:
(1) Vessels which do not moor in the lock must communicate before moving ahead.
(2) A fl otilla, including tug groups, may communicate as a single unit via the lead
vessel.
