LOCK COMMUNICATIONS:<br />
Vessels entering or departing the locks at Avonmouth or Royal Portbury should use the<br />
following communications procedures.<br />
(1) Vessels must request permission to enter the lock from Bristol VTS on VHF Ch 12,<br />
prior to commencing their approach.<br />
(2) Vessels should then communicate directly with Avonmouth Lock Control or Portbury<br />
Lock Control on VHF Ch 14.<br />
(3) Vessels departing the lock inward-bound must request permission from Avonmouth<br />
Lock Control or Portbury Lock Control before letting go any mooring lines. Subsequently<br />
they should call Avonmouth Dock <strong>Radio</strong> or Royal Portbury Dock <strong>Radio</strong> before moving<br />
ahead for permission to enter the dock, and again when:<br />
(a) <strong>The</strong> vessel is made fast to a berth<br />
(b) Before shutting down their engines/systems<br />
(4) All vessels (with the exception <strong>of</strong> harbour tugs and workboats), must request<br />
permission to leave any dock or berth from Avonmouth Dock <strong>Radio</strong> or Royal Portbury<br />
Dock <strong>Radio</strong>. <strong>The</strong> following information must be passed before permission to leave the<br />
berth is granted:<br />
(a) Maximum draught<br />
(b) Next port <strong>of</strong> call<br />
(c) If piloted, confi rmation that the Master/pilotage exchange has been completed<br />
satisfactorily or;<br />
(d) If not piloted (non-compulsory or pilotage exemption) then confi rmation that a<br />
passage plan has been completed for the immediate voyage<br />
(5) On completion <strong>of</strong> the previous communication (see (4)) and if the vessel is<br />
proceeding to any lock then it should, before departing the berth, contact Avonmouth<br />
Lock Control or Portbury Lock Control on VHF Ch 14 to ascertain lock status and to<br />
receive other information such as wind speed/direction and position in the lock.<br />
(6) Vessels departing the lock outward-bound must request permission from Bristol<br />
VTS on VHF Ch 12 before letting go any mooring lines.<br />
Notes:<br />
(1) Vessels which do not moor in the lock must communicate before moving ahead.<br />
(2) A fl otilla, including tug groups, may communicate as a single unit via the lead<br />
vessel.<br />
