5.9 Educational Collaboration A range of collaborations have been established between the Centre and other educational institutions and organisations. These collaborations involve the development and implementation of educational programs and courses, the provision of support for student projects and theses, and the exchange of students and staff. 5.9.1 BP Solar Sydney BP Solar manufactures, designs, markets and installs solar systems for residential, commercial and industrial sectors. The Australian branch of BP Solar is located at Sydney Olympic Park and staff from this company kindly donated the use of their Solar Powered Ice- Cream Cart to the Centre for use on Courses and Careers Day to increase the awareness of photovoltaics in a novel manner. 5.9.2 Edwards Hot Water Edwards Hot Water produces hot water systems for domestic and commercial purposes using a variety of energy sources which includes solar. This organisation has supported the second year biodiesel trailer over the last few years and provided ongoing advice and support to students working in the project in 2005. 5.9.3 The Foundation of Goodness Based in tsunami-affected Seenigama, Sri Lanka, The Foundation of Goodness is a nongovernment organisation which assists villagers in Seenigama and neighbouring areas with rebuilding housing, infrastructure and livelihoods, and providing medical care, welfare, education and skills development. The organisation has been active for 6 years and students and staff involved with the second year developing countries project liaised with this organisation in preparation for travel to Sri Lanka in 2006 to install photovoltaic powered water pumping and water fi ltration systems. 5.9.4 Fowlers Gap UNSW Arid Zone Research Station In 2005 a fourth year thesis student collaborated with staff at UNSW’s Fowlers Gap Research Station, 110 kilometres north of Broken Hill in the state’s far west. The aim of the project was to test and maintain an existing photovoltaic pumping system, and to design and install a new water pumping system suitable for stock watering. The student’s work was deemed a success in that repairs she made to the array increased output by more than 33 percent which provided the homestead with suffi cient water and hence a new and expensive array was not required. Shelley Bambrook at Fowlers Gap Station 5.9.5 Kyocera Solar Kyocera Solar produces and supplies solar energy products and in 2005 donated mounting frames for the fourth year thesis conducted in collaboration with the UNSW Fowler’s Gap Arid Zone Research Station. 142
5.9.6 Murdoch University Western Australia Scientia Professor Wenham was awarded an adjunct appointment at Murdoch University to help the university implement a new undergraduate degree in Renewable Energy Engineering which commenced in 2001. Prof Wenham still holds this appointment and is also a member of the Murdoch University Renewable Energy Engineering Board. This collaboration is important for the exchange of educational material for both institutions. 5.9.7 Queensland Sustainable Energy Industry Development Group (QSEIDG) The Queensland Sustainable Energy Industry Development Group was formed in 2004 to enhance collaboration between government, education, industry, and community organisations involved in sustainable energy and energy effi cient projects in Queensland. This organisation has developed mobile training facilities to raise awareness of sustainable energy. Each trailer has working examples of photovoltaic systems, wind energy systems, solar hot water heating and water pumping. The organisation has allowed the Centre to use their design for this trailer to build our own mobile display unit suitable for the annual Courses and Careers Day. 5.9.8 Randwick City Council The Centre is in collaboration with the Randwick City Council on a fourth year thesis which is investigating the potential application of high-profi le, public renewable energy projects in the Randwick City Council area. Feasibility studies are to be conducted as part of this project which commenced in July 2005 and will be completed mid-2006. 5.9.9 Suntech Power Corporation Suntech, a partly Australian-owned company operating in China, has been actively involved in assisting UNSW with the development, testing and evaluation of educational material in the PV area such as in the development, testing and evaluation of a software package called the Virtual Production Line. Signifi cant numbers of UNSW undergraduate students also participate in industrial training at Suntech. These students fi nd their time in China an extremely valuable educational and cultural experience. This collaboration has also resulted in members of Suntech visiting the Centre and obtaining experience in the Centre’s laboratories. 143
