The number of fixed telephones in service got on the top in 2000, since then it is just have<br />

been decreasing. CLECs were growing until June/05 when it got 33,891 thousand, but it<br />

presented decrease in the 2Q06.<br />

Public Telephony<br />

In 1984 occurred the dismemberment of the AT&T in the United States with the formation of<br />

AT&T (Long Distance) and seven regional local telephony operators (RBOCs): Ameritech,<br />

Bell Atlantic, Bell South, Nynex, Pacific Telesis, South-Western Bell Corporation (SBC) and<br />

US West.<br />

These operators, as the GTE are known as "Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers" (ILECs).<br />

With the telecommunications deregulation in US appeared the "Local Competitive Exchange<br />

Carriers" (CLEC). In 2004 the CLECs had 32 million accesses: 57,7% were Unbundled,<br />

16,5% resale and 25,9% proper ones.<br />
