5.5.1.2 Electricity
As Powerline communication requires an electricity infrastructure, a very brief overview on
the development of the electricity industries is provided.
The next figure shows the access to electricity by region. Only Africa has a lower access per
capita than some of the Asian regions in question.

Growth in demand for electricity is outstripping demand for other types of energy in the
ESCAP region, as the region becomes increasingly electrified and per capita consumption
rises. This trend is particularly strong in the developing countries of the region.
However the figure below shows that electricity generation in the Asian region is dominated
by a few large countries, with China alone accounting for 28%. Australia, China, India,
Japan, the Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation together accounted for about 87%
of the total generation in the countries considered – which generally represent the developed
countries.
