B.8.4 IP-TV service providers<br />

The IP-TV service is not very diffused in Africa, but many companies intend to enter on this<br />

market.<br />

[A24] Currently, Telkom South Africa has been awarded a pay-TV licence by the country’s<br />

communications regulator ICASA. Three other firms - Hosken Consolidated Investments,<br />

Walking On Water and OnDigital - were also granted concessions; 18 companies had<br />

originally applied for licences. Telkom says its media division expects to launch commercial<br />

pay-TV services within 12-18 months.<br />

B.8.5 The market of the AMR<br />

An actual trend, sees the widespread introduction of Automated Meter Reading (AMR)<br />

technology, which is based on one-way or two-way communication and allows utility<br />

companies to take remote wireless meter readings from either a handheld device or a static<br />

base station. One of the principal firms dealing with this sector is Elster.<br />

[A25] Elster Group is the world’s leading manufacturer and supplier of highly accurate, high<br />

quality, integrated metering and utilization solutions to the gas, electricity and water<br />

industries. Elster is at the forefront of developing the next generation of data intelligence<br />

technology for metering. Known as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), it provides<br />

utilities with a host of invaluable functionality, from leakage detection for water meters to<br />

outage management via electricity meters.<br />

Elster is also present in South Africa, in Johannesburg.<br />

B.8.6 Internet service providers<br />

Telkom is Africa's largest integrated communications company. It operates in South Africa,<br />

where up to a year ago, it had a position of uncontested monopoly. Telkom offers many<br />

services, among which: internet services (DSL, ISDN, Satellite, Domain Name Services,<br />

Hosting, VoIP), line services (Telephone lines, ISDN lines, Prepaid fone), call services<br />

(BlockCallPlus, Call Answer, WorldCall), phones equipment (PC and modems, phone
