<strong>The</strong> <strong>Story</strong> <strong>Of</strong> <strong>Swami</strong> <strong>Rama</strong><br />

Krishna, <strong>Swami</strong> Narayan being in close contact<br />

with him in his latter days at Lahore writes as<br />

follows: "<strong>Swami</strong>ji was absorbed day and night in<br />

his reveries of Krishna. <strong>The</strong> mere mention of the<br />

name of Krishna sent him into trance. If he heard<br />

someone playing on a flute, he was lost in the<br />

illusion of the player being his Krishna. At Lahore<br />

for hours he roamed on the bank of the Ravi in<br />

thought of Him. He was always serious and<br />

solemn. One of his intimate associates spoke thus<br />

of his absorption: "Once I saw <strong>Swami</strong> <strong>Rama</strong> on the<br />

banks of the Ravi and the sky was overcast with<br />

purple clouds. <strong>Swami</strong> <strong>Rama</strong> was crying aloud—O<br />

there is my Krishna! O Krishna! O purple cloudcoloured<br />

God! This colour of the cloud is Thine.<br />

This colour maddens me. Why art thou hidden?<br />

Where art Thou? O cloud! Why dost thou not tell<br />

me? Thou art floating on heights. Thou canst see<br />

more than myself. Tell me, tell me, where is my<br />

Krishna? Aha! I see thou art black, O cloud!<br />

Because thou also art in pang of separation from<br />

him. Shall I not see Him, the Beloved! Ah! <strong>The</strong><br />

world would bite me, if I see Him not. To whom<br />

shall I go and open my heart? O Krishna! For <strong>The</strong>e,<br />

I renounced my relatives and friends, I threw away<br />

false shame and honour." Seeing the clouds parting<br />
