like an irresponsible joyous boy that had no<br />

reputation of any kind to look after*. His literary<br />

criticism was always affectionate and light* It was<br />

private and conversational, not studied and heavy.<br />

He would say: "What use was Shankara Acharya's<br />

hiding his own light under a bushel? He always<br />

quoted authorities* Well did Mohammad give the<br />

Truth on the authority of his own personal<br />

realisation. Allah hu Akbar Mohammad Rasul<br />

Allah"!<br />

He loved the mountains and their solitudes. He<br />

lived in the densest forests of oaks and pines, and<br />

he walked out at the dead of night into pathless<br />

ravines and climbed the steep mountains like a<br />

child of nature, and glided into the very heart of<br />

things as the birds fly in the air. He was at his best<br />

when he walked in the Himalayan forests with his<br />

eyes half closed, looking askance at the mightiest<br />

potentates of the world.<br />

Even while in America he would run from his<br />

social engagements, as if the stuffy atmosphere of<br />

society choked his mind. He went up to live on the<br />
