cutting wood from the mountains and adding it to<br />

the home supplies of his host Dr. Hiller. He told<br />

me, "<strong>Rama</strong> had to work hard in Shasta, for he did<br />

not like to live in country like America without his<br />

share of physical labour. <strong>Rama</strong> loved his solitude.<br />

And <strong>Rama</strong> was the first to climb the peak of the<br />

Shasta Mountain starting with many American<br />

competitors, though he declined to accept the first<br />

prize that was offered him. <strong>The</strong> copies of the<br />

magazine that gave the account of his ascent were<br />

sold so rapidly that it was considered a<br />

phenomenal sale. <strong>Rama</strong> ran a Marathon race, ran<br />

out of the mere love of running, it was a race of 30<br />

miles and <strong>Rama</strong> came first." And it may be noted<br />

here that there was a time when he was in Lahore,<br />

as a student and a Professor, when fears of<br />

complete breakdown of his health were<br />

entertained. He was an extremely weak youth,<br />

almost a physical wreck, and he had built up his<br />

health by sheer force of his will.<br />

<strong>Rama</strong> had a hammock put up for himself across<br />

the rapids of the Shasta river, and there he sat<br />

cooing in tune with "his birdies"—as he said<br />

"feeling happier than the President of all the<br />
