a brother for his sister. <strong>The</strong> passionate love of<br />

woman, the chivalrous spirit of protecting her and<br />

the home which consists of the woman and the<br />

child, even at the cost of life, the love of death in<br />

times of an invader's invasion of the aggregate of<br />

these homes—called one's country— the complete<br />

and perfect refusal to accept the life of slavery, to<br />

meet death and downfall rather than loss of liberty<br />

and love, in short, infinite worship of woman, land<br />

and life as it is, as we find it, and as we live it as<br />

good, well-behaved gentle animals—such are the<br />

elements in human consciousness which go to<br />

make up the healthy feeling of patriotism. For<br />

monks to get up and preach patriotism, without<br />

the passionate love for a sweet home, without the<br />

deep attachment to woman as mother and<br />

sweetheart and without the spirit of sacrifice for<br />

her sake both in labour and in love, in peace and in<br />

war, how can healthy love for the country be ever<br />

produced, in spite of a thousand interpretations of<br />

the philosophy of Karma by Vivekananda, <strong>Rama</strong>,<br />

Aurobindo and Tilak.<br />

In India, for centuries, there has been an element of<br />

disgust in the Indian consciousness for woman as<br />

she is supposed to retard the spiritual progress of<br />
