THE FRAGRANCE THAT SUSTAINED<br />

HIM<br />

IN the exposition of the fundamental thoughts of<br />

his life, he wrote his journals called "Aliph" in<br />

Urdu, with a rich treasury of quotations from<br />

Urdu, Persian, Sanskrit and English poets and<br />

prophets; he gave lectures and talks in America,<br />

again explaining these truths in a hundred ways,<br />

illustrating himself by numerous stories and<br />

anecdotes from Indian mythology and life. His<br />

English speeches in America are amplifications of<br />

his theme in this book "Aliph," and his whole life<br />

was consumed from day to day in burning itself as<br />

the torch of this divine knowledge. <strong>The</strong> following<br />

quotations from his collection taken at random<br />

from his Urdu book "Aliph," and, turning over its<br />

pages, rendered off-hand into English, as given<br />

below, give us a sufficient gauge of his mind and<br />

its treasures, the intimacies of its thoughts and the<br />

comprehensiveness of his intellect. <strong>The</strong> following<br />

quotations are but a handful of grain out of the<br />

heaped bushelfuls that the Master has garnered.<br />
