of the trans-senses. But the genius of <strong>Swami</strong><br />

Vivekananda and of <strong>Swami</strong> <strong>Rama</strong> did quite<br />

successfully cast the philosophy under the name of<br />

"Practical Vedanta" or "Applied Vedanta" into a<br />

veritable gospel of patriotism. And though a<br />

philosophy of patriotism has been successfully<br />

constructed out of the old materials, yet it falls flat<br />

on the dreamy Indian people, and this Vedanta<br />

fails to inspire them for the uplift of India on those<br />

grounds, however true they may be in their<br />

theoretical bearings. Better than these two<br />

geniuses, the gospel of National duty so brilliantly<br />

extracted out of Krishna's Bhagavad-Gita by the<br />

late Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak and also by<br />

Aurobindo Ghosh is calculated to provide a real<br />

philosophic basis to the thinking Indians for<br />

changing their creed of Other-worldliness into<br />

This-worldliness.<br />

But nothing avails. Patriotism or the affectionate<br />

attachment for one's property in the shape of his<br />

country cannot be generated by any<br />

philosophising. It comes naturally; it cannot be<br />

forced in by thinking. In certain climes and under<br />

the driving force of certain traditions, it is as<br />

natural a feeling in the human breast, as the love of<br />
