personal way. It seems apparent that he came back<br />

from America much impressed with the "success"<br />

achieved by the Western nations and wished his<br />

poor countrymen also to rise. One Religion cannot<br />

unite them, let the love of one common country<br />

inspire them with some life even physical. But this<br />

was not his own apt subject, and his appeal mixed<br />

as it was with transcendentalism was always weak.<br />

<strong>Swami</strong> <strong>Rama</strong> was not in his element here, he could<br />

not surpass <strong>Swami</strong> Vivekananda in his glorious<br />

speeches on the subject. <strong>Swami</strong> Vivekananda was a<br />

born nation-builder, while <strong>Swami</strong> <strong>Rama</strong> was an<br />

ecstatic personality with no thought of the morrow,<br />

no eye on the deeds of men. <strong>The</strong> contact with the<br />

West had therefore weakened <strong>Swami</strong> <strong>Rama</strong> on the<br />

whole, and that wondrous delicacy of emotion,<br />

that trembling throb of the Universal had cut itself<br />

into scarlet shreds to adorn stale sentiments on<br />

patriotism and common intellectual methods of<br />

nation building. Had he lived long and if he had<br />

developed his mind towards this direction instead<br />

of towards religious ecstacy, he would have<br />

become a great Nation-Builder, fm he had in him<br />

all the latent capacities for one. But as it is, he<br />

shook off these thoughts of a limited; sympathy as<br />
