Pretty sweet, right? Well, in I DECLARE WAR, we get to actually see a game of War played through the eyes of the young participants…and they have pretty awesome rules. An exquisite film depicting the brutality of war being played out by young teens (think “Lord of the Flies” meets “Stand By Me”), I DECLARE WAR scoffs at the idea of separating kids from violence by putting the youth in play with the violence. When Skinner performs a coup against his own general and takes Kwon prisoner, opposing general P.K. must do all he can to rescue his best friend and protect his undefeated War record. With their imaginations as the catalysts for the horrors of the killing fields, these kids are playing an intense game complete with guns, grenades, and jealous rage. But the costs of War run deep and soon they realize that even in games, as in life, rules are meant to be broken. —T.W. Mik is a scrawny 11-year-old who lives in Stockholm public housing with his teenage brother Tony. Every once in a while their dad shows up, which is not a good thing since he’s an alcoholic heavy-metal rocker still living the dream. Mik likes to box and watch zombie movies with Tony. But Social Services gets wind of the family’s unsavory living conditions and Mik is hauled off to live with his kindly Bohemian aunt in a village in magical northern Sweden. It’s hard for the city kid to fit in, but soon a cool chick named Pi and her posse decide he’s OK. When the social workers show up again to deposit him with a “suitable” family that’s worse than Harry Potter’s Dursleys, the kids take matters into their own hands. Beck spent his early days split between prison and the ghettos of Chicago where he committed petty crimes, pimped prostitutes, and fed a severe drug addiction. After serving a stretch in solitary confinement, he decided he’d had enough and retired from the game at 42. In 1969 he recounted his experiences in the book Pimp: The Story of My Life, which poetically detailed the bleak realities of the criminal underground. He went on to write several critically-acclaimed books, one of which (Trick Daddy) was adapted for film. This fascinating documentary explores how Beck’s troubled childhood affected his decision to start pimping at 18 and how he struggled to separate from his past long after he gave it up. The film also focuses on his incredible influence on modern culture, featuring an impressive list of guests, including Ice-T, Quincy Jones, Snoop Dogg, Chris Rock, Henry Rollins, and Katt Williams. —E.F.
