Meet Albert Casals, 20, a Barcelona native who has been traveling
the world since he was 15. By himself. With no money.
And his wheelchair. Relentlessly upbeat, Albert’s insistence
on living the life he dreams of has lead him on a globetrotting
whirlwind adventure covering five years of his life. His newest
journey will take him across the globe, literally, to the very spot
that is farthest from his home in Spain: a lighthouse in New
Zealand. This trip, however, will include his girlfriend and will
take him nearly 200 days. Happy-go-lucky is Albert’s meal
ticket as he hitchhikes across foreign lands, stays with welcoming
strangers, and seemingly smiles across 30,000 km
of Earth. Albert isn’t just the subject of this road trip film, he
is the tour guide for the audience, taking us on a journey of
enlightenment that can only be attained through a young man
paralyzed by leukemia but energized by life. Intoxicating and
triumphant, Albert shows us all that life is what you make of
it. And if your dreams are big enough, it truly is a LITTLE
WORLD. (In English and Catalán with subtitles) —T.W.
THE LONG VACATION focuses on three heartbreaking stories of
people who were erased from Slovenia’s civil register in 1992,
due to a controversial law put in place a year after the country
declared its independence. At age 13, Aleksandar returned
home from vacation in Serbia to find that he was no longer
recognized as a citizen. It took 20 years before he could enter
the country again. Katrina was a college student at the time,
losing her apartment, legal papers, and even her parents during
the ordeal. Bosnian-born Nisveta struggled for her daughter
who, for the first two years of her life, was seen as nonexistent
by her country. Over 20,000 people were affected by the cruel
and senseless legislation. Though it was ruled unconstitutional
by Slovenia’s Constitutional Court in 1999, it is estimated
that over 6,000 people are still fighting for legal status. THE
LONG VACATION articulately explores the devastating impact
the law had on innocent Slovenians. By documenting their
incredible stories, the film ensures that they will never be
erased again. (In Slovenian with subtitles) —E.F.
