But the woman people may not know is the one who may have had the biggest impact on the Fab Four. In the dark damp underbelly of the Liverpool bar, The Cellar, Freda Kelly was one of many young girls who fawned over the new band and would later become the heart and soul of their rise to fame. Working in a secretary pool in town, Freda would be recruited to work in the same capacity for the up-and-coming group and continue to do so for the next 11 years until the Beatles’ break up. One of the only documentaries to be given the full blessing of the living band members, GOOD OL’ FREDA is a must-see for Beatles fans who think they’ve seen it all. Beginning with the early days in The Cellar, this documentary recounts the days of four guys looking for their next gig. And it continues all the way to the end when the fame had become too much to bear. It’s been 50 years of silence for the always trustworthy and loyal Freda Kelly and now we get to hear her story. Wells coined the phrase “World Brain,” referring to a future repository of all the writings and knowledge of mankind accessible to every person on earth. Libraries and universities have always attempted this, but at the end of the 20th century Google started a project to make the “World Brain” a reality. Their goal: to digitally scan and preserve every book ever written. With such great and lofty vision comes great controversy. Within such power, argue many, lies the ability to abuse it. Whether you have a digital book or clutch tightly to your paper one, this fascinating documentary explores and debates the ambitious (some say over-reaching) Google project to put the entire world of letters in everybody’s laps. Using diverse commentary from experts around the world, the moral, political, and legal ramifications of Google’s Olympian plans are explored. A punk revolution. Thanks to the ever-punk, “Not,” who proudly displays his pooch, a mohawk, and his name penned into his forehead, France may get their revolution yet. Or burn down trying. Not’s brother, Jean-Pierre, couldn’t be more of an opposite: suit and tie, child rearing, and working in the city’s shopping district at a mattress store. And not well. When Jean-Pierre loses his job (in grand, booze-filled fashion) he finds himself on the streets alongside his brother, who he previously looked upon with disdain. But it’s Not who saves Jean-Pierre and shows him the world of middle finger waving, mohawk-sporting, panhandling ways of punkdom. Like a comical version of “Fight Club” (without the fighting) mixed with the adult-version of “Goonies” (without the treasure hunt), LE GRAND SOIR is a brilliantly funny film from Belgian dark-comedy duo Gustave Kervern and Benoît Delépine. Thousands of sharecroppers were displaced and the devastation was unthinkable, even in light of current tragedies. It was the most destructive river flood in American history. Director Bill Morrison and composer-musician Bill Frisell have combined to create a dream-like and utterly haunting documentary, and THE GREAT FLOOD is unlike any other doc you have seen. Using no spoken words and minimal text to introduce the film’s thematic segments, the film crafts a narrative out of pure vision and sound. Tapping into an astounding wealth of archival footage and wrapping it in an evocative and original jazz soundtrack, the film compels you to witness these horrific events as pure feeling, a shared experience. This disaster was a pivotal moment in American history.
