CAESAR MUST DIE is a brilliant and humanist take on the Bard’s Julius Caesar in which the play is being rehearsed by inmates of a maximum security prison in Rome. Casting real inmates (many facing long sentences for violent crimes) for the roles is just one of the conventions used in this captivating film shot almost entirely in black and white. With scenes shot throughout the prison, CAESAR MUST DIE blends the story of the prisoners rehearsing with the world of the play happening within the prison. The casting choice provides an additional sense of menace, particularly when Brutus decries his allegiances to Caesar, whom he must kill; only a killer’s eyes could authentically convey such inner conflict. CAESAR MUST DIE is at once innovative and captivating while being an eerily genuine portrayal of a classic play brought into a contemporary world. Difficult, yes. Successful, absolutely. Homosexual acts are illegal in Uganda, though Parliament has recently retreated on an anti-homosexuality bill that called for the death penalty. The film introduces us to gay rights advocates including David Kato, who sued a newspaper that called for the execution of gays, publishing individuals’ names and photographs. We see religious fundamentalists like Lou Engle, an American in Uganda spreading the word about the homosexual agenda. Amidst all the emotional carnage, one hero emerges: Bishop Christopher Senyonjo, a jovial man in an oversized suit, who counsels the LGBT community and organizes a safe house for his congregants. During a brief moment of levity they stage a fashion show. But when an activist is killed, the clergyman presiding over his funeral condemns the gay mourners. LA CAMIONETA traces the unexpectedly fascinating transformation of one decommissioned American school bus into a glorious work of art. We ride along as the bus is auctioned off and driven 16 hours through Mexico toward its new destiny as part of the Guatemalan public transport system. When we arrive, our bus is lovingly washed, then pimped out with chrome and vibrant colors. But life is difficult for the drivers of these buses in Guatemala. Gangs threaten extortion and sometimes kill riders when their drivers don’t pay. We visit the humble homes of some drivers, who quietly describe how they overcome their fears to provide for their families. Our beautiful camioneta, festooned with garlands and balloons, is ready to be blessed by a priest, who puts it in the hands of God. A bus ride allows us to share our lives with others for a short time. LA CAMIONETA makes us part of the journey. (In Spanish with subtitles) —B.B. His parents were both prisoners who were married by guards. At the age of six, he was forced to do hard labor, constantly threatened by starvation, beatings, and death. This was all he knew until an older man began telling him stories about life on the outside. After his mother and brother were executed in front of him, Shin successfully escaped, later learning that he’d actually been in a death camp. He eventually made his way to South Korea where he lives today. Shin shares his story all over the world and works with human rights organizations. But, behind the scenes, he still struggles with his freedom. Shocking as it may be, he still longs for the only home he’s ever known.
