In 1980 the MPAA demanded that 40 minutes be removed
from the controversial film “Cruising”—footage never since
seen. In INTERIOR. LEATHER BAR. actor and filmmaker
James Franco decided to re-imagine and film those missing
40 minutes. With a quickly assembled cast, gay and straight,
he and filmmaker Travis Mathews do exactly that. This filmwithin-a-film
charts the reinvention of the censored footage.
As the very real sex unfolds before the camera, the equally real
reactions of the cast are caught. Nothing is hidden from the
viewer on any level. The straight lead faces his limits of sexual
and artistic freedom, passionately questioning Franco about
the validity of the project. The cast believes in Franco’s vision,
but some are unsure just what that is. Pondering the project
even as they film, Franco and his cast discuss the boundaries
of art, prejudice, and sexual expression as the orgy in the
leather bar happens around them. We guarantee that discussion
will continue long after you leave this explicit, moving,
and startling film. —C.R.
Jojo is a rambunctious ten-year-old who mostly raises himself.
Every day he races across the fields to beat his dad as he drives
to his job as a security officer. Jojo’s mom is a folk singer on
tour in America, and he doesn’t know when she’s coming back.
Jojo talks to her on the phone a lot and listens to recordings
of her sweet voice. Left alone, Jojo is in charge of washing the
clothes and cleaning up the kitchen mess after his dad’s rages,
which are getting worse. His dad drinks too much and won’t
let Jojo talk about his mom. One day Jojo finds an injured bird
and takes it home to care for it—even though his dad says
animals belong outside. How can Jojo keep his friend and
help his dad, when all he wants is for his mom to come home?
If only Jojo and Kauw could fly off together. KAUWBOY, the
Netherlands’ entry for the Academy Awards ® , provides a marvel
in young actor Rick Lens. Note: This film contains minimal
strong language. (In Dutch with subtitles) —B.B.
