Its inhabitants, the Haida, are noted seafarers and a linguistically-distinct group. They’re so distinct, in fact, that Naanii Mary Swanson—whose story frames the ruminative SURVIVAL PRAYER—is one of the language’s few remaining speakers. At the time of European contact, the Haida had a stable existence and a vibrant culture. But like so many traditional groups, theirs is at risk due to encroaching commercialization. SURVIVAL PRAYER explores the power of food and nature to sustain a people. Rich with spectacular scenery of the North Pacific coastline and detailed descriptions of wild food gathering and preservation, this is a dreamlike film in which elders tell ancient tales describing how nature is tied to the nurturing of body and soul. Late one night, Al and two buddies are cruising around the streets in his high-end Mercedes, following his alcohol-soaked bachelor party. Distracted by each other and their portable devices, they hit Adrian as he crosses the street to work. In a panic, Al gets out briefly, then drives off and leaves the foreigner bleeding in the street. But Juliette has seen everything from her balcony. Obsessed with tracking down the driver and helping the wife of his victim, she thrusts herself into an impossible—and dangerous—situation. Told through the eyes of Verstraete’s physician best friend Thomas, TIME OF MY LIFE takes the audience through Mario and Thomas’ early years as young, fun-loving protesters along with their friend, the alluring Lynn. Soon these men become adults with big-boy problems as Mario is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Refusing to die slowly and painfully, Mario decides that when the time comes, he should have the right to make the decision to end his own life. But first he must convince his family, Thomas, and all of Belgium. As charming as it is poignant, TIME OF MY LIFE is a captivating film with powerful performances as we watch a man in his struggle to die with dignity and the effects his decision has on his friends and family who have surrounded him his whole life. His aversion to relationships gets him in hot water with long-time girlfriend Cheeky. RayRay can’t imagine living a complicated, expensive life like his sister, who has six kids. But one day the unthinkable happens and his sister is killed. A frosty social worker (Kelly McGillis) arrives on RayRay’s doorstep with the wailing children in tow, informing him he’s their next of kin. Dazed, RayRay lets the kids subsist on pizza and sleep in laundry baskets. He can’t wait to start farming them out to “good homes,” though that means splitting them up. Gradually, the chicos start to grow on him and he almost gets used to spending all his money. But then a little one goes missing and RayRay is blamed. When the authorities try to take his family away, TIO PAPI must come to the rescue. This colorful fiesta is sure to warm even the coldest of hearts. —B.B.
