Filip Kapic is a Zagreb children’s performer. A policeman calls to say Filip’s son has been caught with marijuana. He cuts Filip a deal: he won’t press charges if Filip will pose as a priest, visit a dying Mafioso, and get him to confess to a murder. A sad-eyed agnostic, Filip takes on the persona of “Father Lovo” and gets past “Macko” Mackovic’s thugs standing guard in the hospital. Macko is an enthusiastic, family-loving murderer who feels no remorse about the bodies his construction firm has planted in Zagreb buildings. When he finds out he’s not going to die after all, an elated Macko calls on his Church pals to promote “Father Lovo” for performing a miracle. Max, an orphaned teenager, is brought by a pastor to work for the Bösinger family. A miserable lot, they take his shoes away while he does chores. Bösinger is a drunkard; his wife is a bitter woman who makes Max sleep in the pigsty. A girl named Berteli arrives to work, and soon she and Max are plotting their escape. The kindly village schoolteacher encourages Max’s talent as an accordionist, fueling his dreams of a brighter tomorrow. But before he can imagine a future, he has to survive. Based on 100,000 true stories, THE FOSTER BOY is the most successful Swiss film in years, a gripping reminder that the nation was not always a land of milk and honey. Joe, expertly acted by Wendell Pierce (The Wire, Treme), is a middle-aged gentleman on a date with a young man named June, who he met online. Abigayle (the captivating Aja Naomi King) is Joe’s teenaged daughter, precocious and stuck in a life between her secretive father and bed-ridden mother. Looking for escape, Abi sneaks out with Dexter, an intrepid yet alluring boy from her school, and the two awkwardly search for a connection. Meanwhile, across town Joe is looking for companionship with the closeted June, who seems to be searching for direction. Both Joe and Abi find their release in their respective partners for the night. But they soon realize that escape from their realities isn’t easy and, no matter how entrenched you get, you must always return home. One glorious weekend in late summer, the couple play host to two young lesbian students who are on a break from their studies in Berlin. As the visit progresses, these women reveal their views and hopes to each other, discovering and celebrating the differences and similarities of their respective generations. But as these four unique women reveal their inner selves, the various attractions of their outer selves begin to factor in as well. Sexual tensions start to slowly mount and the long, heavenly summer weekend lies before them.
